The PNG powerlifters have been in training in the High Performance Centre over the past weeks with their new head Coach, Scott Upston.
Upston was in the country over the last two weeks, and has seen an improvement in training and is confident that the team is on the right track.
The PNG lifters did well to impress the judges at the recent international meet in Melbourne, Australia.
Setting a number of record lifts and the most personal best, the team now has a greater task at hand – the highly anticipated 2015 Pacific Games
The side is looking positive, with the likes of Vagi Henry and Linda Pulsan who is well respected in the sport and other fellow lifters who are all gold medal contenders.
Coach Upston said a part of his role is to identify the athletes’ potential and encourage them to step up. He said that the team was doing just that, which is good.
The team has been training twice a day and making significant improvements; with some exceeding their personal best.
The Nauruans will be PNG’s biggest rivals, at the games.
Upston believes the Nauruans could be tough to beat, but the team could prove a force to reckon with.
