PNG Police Commissioner Officially Responds

By Vasinatta Yama – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Police Commissioner, Gari Baki, confirmed an incident that happened today resulting in police discharging teargas and opening fire at UPNG students.

He confirmed that approximately 23 students were injured during the incident, of which four were severely injured and hospitalised.

Baki has tasked Assistant Commissioner of Crimes, Victor Isouve, to investigate the incident.

Commissioner Baki confirmed that there were no deaths.

However, he said police will investigate the outcome of those injured and give a confirmed report on whether the injuries where from a firearm or teargas.

Baki said he is awaiting medical reports to confirm the details of the injuries sustained. He added that the students are responsible, saying that if they had remained on the university campus nothing would have happened.

However, he said he is not protecting the police in that matter, saying that investigations will commence.

Meanwhile, several police officers have been injured and police vehicles stoned by students.

The commissioner has cautioned political leaders to be honest, and to stop stressing ordinary citizens with their political motives.

He also assured the public that police will be in full force in the capital city to bring back normalcy.
