PNG Midwifery Society to Host Symposium

By Sasha Pei-Silovo – EM TV, Port Moresby

The PNG Midwifery Society is staging its first symposium, appropriately themed ‘Midwife for life’. The symposium will be held on the 23rd and 24th of November, 2015, at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Port Moresby.

The Papua New Guinea Midwifery Society is an organisation that represents midwives throughout the country. Midwives play a significant role in communities as skilled birth attendants but are faced with immense challenges often from the lack of essential equipment, facilities and infrastructure to efficiently carry out their duties. Nevertheless, despite the hardships encountered, midwives continue to persevere.

PNG has one of the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world; with women dying daily from pregnancy and childbirth complications. The up-skilling of midwives is equally important to addressing maternal and infant mortality and the status of women’s health in PNG.

Registration is now open for the PNG Midwifery Society Symposium and midwives throughout Papua New Guinea can register their attendance by emailing pngmidwiferysoc@gmail.com before November 1.
