PNG men’s rugby sevens set for Wellington

by Dion Kombeng – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

After a successful performance in the Noosa Sevens in 2014, the National Men’s Sevens team has qualified to play at the Wellington Sevens early next month.

The team is currently in camp and is focused on maintaining the form that enabled them to qualify for the Wellington Sevens.

They recently spent three gruelling weeks training in Fiji, where they also played in a few local tournaments.

According to Captain Hubert Tseraha and team manager Billy Rapilla, preparations are going well and they have taken a lot from their recent trip to Fiji. They believe that the recent training in Fiji was a great stepping stone for not only the Wellington Sevens, but the upcoming Hong Kong Sevens as well.

The new-look National Sevens team features many faces who have yet to play in IRB sanctioned tournaments. Rapilla says this is a new era for Papua New Guinean rugby sevens and they have trained well to do well.

PNG has been placed in a pool with current champions New Zealand, 2013 winners England, and Canada. The team has prepared well and is looking forward to the challenge.

They depart for Wellington this Sunday.
