By Sharlyne Eri – EMTV News

Health Minister, Sir Puka Temu says work has begun to amend the law to clarify the functions of District Development Authorities and Provincial Health Authorities.

This is among topics being discussed at a three-day consultation on the reviewing PNG Health laws.

The consultations began today.

The consultation on reviewing Health laws, forms part of the on-going review of PNG health related laws led by the Health department.

Minister in charge, Dr Puka Temu said the department is trying to redefine the roles that DA’s and PHA’s have in the health system.

The Government provides health functional grants to PHA’s and on top of that the Provincial Governments also receive health grants under provincial budgets.

Dr Puka Temu said these grants will be unitized well only when proper laws are in place to define the functions and responsibilities of each body.

The minister said the bottom-line of amending health laws in the country is to make sure the delivery of health services reached everyone, especially those at the villages, who make up bulk of the county’s population is.
