Cuba is the leading amateur boxing nation in the world, with many of their fighters being successful in the sport. And now, there are plans for Papua New Guinea’s elite boxers to train in Cuba.
Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, has agreed to support the boxers by sending them overseas to prepare for the Olympic Games in Rio.
Minister for Public Enterprise and Kavieng MP, Ben Micah, announced this at the closing of the National Boxing Championship in Kavieng.
They will be leaving next year to Cuba for training.
Micah made it clear that the training in Cuba will further upgrade their skills to the level and standards of the Carribeans.
He also urged the country to support the boxers and hopefully have a boxing world champion from PNG.
Their training will start next year in preparation for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games with the aim of PNG boxers making it onto the international stage.
