One Billion Rising against Domestic Violence

Papua New Guineatook part inthe global fight against violence towards women. This is called 1 Bellion Rising;the Theme “Be akthe Silence make a Statement”.

The event organised bytheInstititue of National Affairs…Consultative Implementation and Monitoring Council was staged atthe Jack Pidik Park in Port Moresby yesterday.

It’sthe first time for the 1 Bellion Rising campaign to be launched in PNG It’s in support of ongoing efforts to decrease discrimination against women.

Organiser Isi Oru saysthe event gives a voice tothe voiceless. IPNG Domestic violence affects ninety percent of woman as stated in a law commission report.

Savethe children, watePNG, Church organisations and ther civil societies took part inthe awareness campaign.

Chairman ofthe family and sexual violence committee Lawrence Kalinoe’saysthe country belongs to everyone, one gender should not be deprived.

According to a law reform commission reportoone in every three woman is subject to rape. Even fromtheir husbands.

The US Ambassador tPNG’says violence against woman has to stop. And it’starts fromthe family and must be reinforced in schools.

Candles were lit in remembrance of victims of violence andthe releasing of balloons signifliedthe one billion that are rising againstthe brutalities.
