Ok Tedi Mine Community: Government Did Not Consult Us

Representttatives ofthe Ok Tedi Mine Villages and Community Mine Continuation Agreement communities saythere was no consultation withthem beforethe Government passed legislation transferring shareholding in Ok Tedi Mine Limited tothe State.

 

They saidthey were not consulted by any official fromthe National Executive Council orthe Provincial Government and what has transpired was done behind closed doors.

 

They saidthey were never consulted aboutthe issue, by any government representative,the Open Members orthe Governor of Western Province, and never gavetheir consent.

 

“We have never consented for Government Takeover ofPNG DP’shares held inthe Trust on our behalf in OTML during mine life extension community consultations and negotiations,” said Joel Dangkim, CMCA Spokesperson.

“We have been deprived of our rights to shareholding and dividend.”
 

Representtting over a 160 villages inthe mine area and three open electorates,they sain PNG DP has done much for the province thanthe Government.

 

They now fear thatthe Government takeover will see a decline in service development.

The representatives saythey were happy withthe arrangement withPNGSDP and want it to remain that way.

 

They have prepared a set of demands directed atthe Prime Minister Peter O’Neill,the NEC, Governor Ati Wobiro, andtheir three Open Members.
