A nightclub and restaurant in Madang was attacked by drunken soldiers last Saturday night, resulting in the wounding of the wife of a well-known PNG musician who sustained injuries, from the attack.
Known to locals as one of Madang’s safest nightclub and eatery; patrons were well into excitement on the dancing floor at the Seafarers Club when seven shots were fired, four on the roof and three on the floor, by the soldiers.
A police officer has confirmed the incident but could not elaborate further, saying that the Madang Provincial Police Commander, Sylvester Kalaut, would be the right person to give more information on the incident.
The seven soldiers from the PNGDF are believed to be engaged with the construction of the Madang to Baiyer Highway.
The reason behind the discharging of firearms by the soldiers, is yet to be confirmed.
Club Manager, Dr Cecelia Kainge said the security guards were unable to carry out proper checks at the gate because the soldiers had been rushing to enter the club.
“The guards thought they were law enforcers and will behave acceptably that’s why they did not carry out proper checks”, she said.
Famous Madang musician, Gedix Atege was performing on stage when the incident happened.
A bullet fired on the floor, skidded on the tiles and went into the right calf muscle of Gedix Atege’s wife. She was admitted to Madang’s Modilon General Hospital.
Attempts to get comments from PPC Kalaut were unsuccessful.
