A population policy is amongst three new policies the national government will be tabling this year.
National Planning and Monitoring Minister, Charles Abel says choices will be made for families on birth control. This will put human beings at the centre of development.
Papua New Guinea is experiencing an increase in population growth.
According to the 2011 census figures released by the National Statistical Office in 2014, Papua New Guinea’s population has doubled in the last three decades.
With the draft population policy soon to be tabled in parliament, the Department of National Planning and Monitoring aims to give individual children the right to proper education and better health services, despite where they live.
Unlike China, which has a one child policy, Papua New Guinean families will be provided with choices on how best they plan their families.
Goal Five of the United Nations Medium Development Goals states that by 2015, maternal mortality rate is expected to fall to 703 live births from 100,000 births worldwide.
The policy, once tabled in parliament, will be executed in 2016 to 2017 and will be receiving financial assistance from the government.
