Newly appointed Chief Electoral Commissioner, Patilias Gamato, was officially sworn in today by Chief Justice, Sir Salamo Injia.
Gamato will take over from outgoing Commissioner, Sir Andrew Trawen.
He swore on oath to diligently perform his duty as the Chief Electoral Commissioner of Papua New Guinea.
The formality signifies the start of Patilias Gamato’s term in office as the Chief Electoral Commissioner of Papua New Guinea.
Present to witness this was the outgoing commissioner, Sir Andrew Trawen and former Electoral Commissioner Rueben Kaiulo.
Chief Justice, Sir Salamo Injia, challenged Chief Electoral Commissioner Gamato to conduct several of the failed local level government elections.
The 2012 elections have seen a record 105 election petition cases.
Most of which have been cleared with less than five yet to go to trial.
Gamato understands the urgency to conduct these elections. He will be working closely with the courts and his legal team to expedite the process.
The 2017 elections may be a year away but Gamato is confident of delivering a successful election.
They are currently working with the Australian Electoral Commission to carry out roll cleansing to update the common roll.
