New Approach Needed to Deal with GBV

Gender based violence in PNG has gone out of control and is an emerging public health crisis and serious human rights issue.

Senior specialist in women’s health, Obstetrician and Gynecologist, Dr Mathias Sapuri says the Government should establish a Royal Commission to look into the root causes of Gender Based Violence and develop effective policies.

Dr Sapuri says the National Government needs to take a drastic action to control and eliminate violence of all forms.

He says existing laws to protect the victims are there but are not effectively enforced.

The country needs a new approach to dealing with gender based violence and the findings of a Royal Commission can help us achieve that.
