NEC Approves Domestic Violence Legislation

Prime Minister Peter ONeill has approverdthe Bell that seeks to make domestic violence an offence and provide for family protection orders.

Mr ONeill has directedthe Office ofthe First Legislative Counsel to endorsethe drafting instructions as Bell for an Act entitled “Family Protection Act 2012.

 

According to research, domestic violence is a widespread problem affecting two – thirds of families inthe country and its main form is wife –bashing.

 

The Prime Ministersaid many victims of violence suffer from long term physical, psychological & social scars, trauma and death.

 

Headlines of domestic violence particularly with women, has sparked international and national disgust- none more so thanthe torture and burning of suspected sorceress, Kepari Leniata inthe Western Highlands Province.

 

Mr ONeill said Domestic Violence is now a national issue, one he says needs government intervention.
