With the 2017 National General Election just around the corner, a massive Electoral Roll update program will be carried out in the National Capital District (NCD) over the next few weeks.
The NCD has over 300,000 voters who are expected to cast their votes during polling period next year.
NCD Election Manager, Terence Hetinu, said the target of this roll update exercise is the younger population.
Today, 800 Enrollment Agents gathered at the Jack Pidik Park, ready to be deployed to locations throughout NCD to rollout the voter registration exercise.
However, due to certain issues, the exercise was deferred and will commence this Wednesday and will run for a maximum of 21 days.
NCD Election Manager, Terence Hetinu, said the voter registration exercise will no longer be conducted door- to-door as it was in the past.
Mr Hetinu said one of the challenges for the roll update exercise is identifying people who have moved from one part of the city to another.
Another challenge is making sure that the new settlements and suburbs have polling booths come 2017.
The nation’s capital has 3 electorates; Moresby North West, Moresby South and Moresby North East.
