Morobe police in need of more manpower

by Scott Waide – EM TV, Lae

Morobe’s Provincial Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Kaiglo Ambane, says Morobe’s police manpower needs to be boosted through a concerted effort that should include restructuring positions and building policing housing.

The total police strength in Morobe, which is situated outside of the Lae Metropolitan Command, is a little over 200.

Some police stations in districts are unmanned and some have aging officers who are struggling to maintain law and order.

“Up to six district police stations don’t have policemen,” Ambane said. “You must also note that each large district also has substations that need at least one or two officers.”

The structure for rural policing is also unattractive for younger officers looking for a career path.

“In order to attract younger officers, there has to be a path for them and positions must be created.”

Morobe’s geography is a challenge for authorities who have to deal with various cultural mindsets and attitudes.
