Pavement repairs have begun for the resealing of road, from Arawa to Rigu Bridge, in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.
This project is part of a larger K13.3 million, for roads upgrade, linking Arawa town.
This is a joint partnership program of the Australian Government with the Autonomous Bougainville to support economic activities.
Road from Arawa Town to Rigu Bridge connects Kieta Port to the rest of Central Bougainville.
The Kieta Port brings in over 150 containers per month with hardware, building supplies, store goods, medical supplies and more.
The infrastructure would be a real boost for Bougainville’s business houses and the agriculture sector.
Locally grown cocoa and copra are also exported out from Kieta Port, to overseas countries, like Singapore and New Zealand.
Meanwhile local contractors have been engaged, and are preparing nearly ten kilometres of road for sealing.
This project is funded by the Australian Aid Program and delivered through the Transport Sector Support Program.
Australia’s High Commission notes the project will improve the Bougainville’s transport network.
