Micah Says ‘Spill and Fill’ a Necessary Process

By Serah Aupong – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Publice Enterprise and State Investments Minister, Ben Micah, has called the “spill and fill” retrenchment exercise by Telikom PNG a “necessary process.”

This support for Telikom’s retrenchment exercise comes after criticism by some Telikom workers, who are part of the PNG Communications Workers Union.

Minister Micah told EMTV News today that he had held discussions with both the management of Telikom PNG, and the Communication Workers Union on the issue.

He said after these discussions he feels that this retrenchment exercise, which utilises the spill and fill format, is needed.

Issues that have been raised by the Workers Union primarily revolve around the legality of this process, which the union has taken to court.

Last month, concerned Telikom PNG workers staged a sit-in protest.

Telikom CEO, Michael Donnelly, said at the time that Telikom PNG’s management was not acting illegally.
