Health Minister Michael Malabag flew into Goroka yesterday to intervene to end dispute atthe Goroka General Hospital and to ensurethe resumption of services.
The hospital was closed since last Friday over a number of issues between staff and management.
Last Friday staff and members of National Doctors Association based in Goroka conducted a sit-in protest againstthe Hospital Beard.
Issues include lack of medical equipment and supplies that has resulted inthe deteriorating state ofthe hospital. Staffs saythey are willing to work but lack of necessary equipment has forcedthem to instigatethe protest.
Doctors and nurses have raised concerns withthe Hospital Beard andthe Provincial Health Authority since May this year but nothing was done.
Withthe protest into its seventh day, Health Minister Michael Malabag flew into Goroka this morning and met with concerned parties all day to addressthe issue.
Its anticipated normalcy will prevail atthe Hospitaloon as functions atthe hospital have been scaled down to emergency cases only.
Meanwhile, Minister Malabag returned from Goroka later that afternoon and saidthe issue has been resolved and normal operations will start today.
He has appointed Doctor Francis Wandi as Acting Hospital Manager. He will runthe hospital until Novermber when proper Beard Members are elected.
