Local Matupit Islanders Work with IOM to Come Up With Strategies for Disaster Resilience

Matupit Island in East New Britain province has been rendered a dangerous place to live in.

The Island is located within a caldera, surrounded by the menacing Tavurvur and Vulcan volcanoes.

The people have over the years been relying on their human instincts to detect danger of any possible volcano eruption.

Until recently, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has been assisting the Matupit people to translate their traditional knowledge into a disaster and risk management plan.
