Jomik Cup a Success

With the aim of uniting the people of Bougainville, the Jomik Cup ended on a high note over the weekend.

700 sports enthusiasts flocked to the Hutjena Oval in Buka to compete in a week of soccer and volleyball tournament.

The tournament attracted 32 teams in soccer and 20 teams to compete in seven days of competition.

Ioro United, in a tough encounter edged out Destiny three points to two in the soccer finals.

In its third year of staging, Jomik Group of companies committed K21, 000 for this year’s tournament.

An estimated 12, 000 crowd flocked the oval to witness the event.

In their advocacy to promote peace and harmony in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, sports is used as an avenue to instill positive attitude amongst the youth for the good of their wellbeing.

The event came to a closure on Saturday with the grand final between Destiny Rangers and Ioro United, known widely as Panguna Metals, which saw the oval packed to capacity, with an estimated crowd of 12, 000 people.

Destiny Rangers Club, sponsored by local business ‘Destiny’ narrowly missing out on winning the cup this year when they lost to Ioro United FC 3-2. Club Patron and managing director of Destiny, Jeffrey Magum expressed his delight at the team’s achievements on social media, despite them losing to the Panguna men.

Ioro United FC were awarded the K10, 000 prize money, for first place, with Destiny Rangers Club taking out second place, winning K6, 000, third placed winners won K4000. Volleyball winners won K5,000, K3,000 and K2,000 respectively. A total of K21, 000 was committed to the tournament by Jomik.

The Jomik Cup began in 2012 and was first staged in Konga in the Siwai District of South Bougainville.
