The winner of the 2015 intercity cup in Papua New Guinea and the champions of the Vodafone Cup in Fiji will compete in Port Moresby in the inaugural rugby league Melanesian Club Championship on the 10th of October.
The match will be played at the new look Sir John Guise stadium where both clubs will play off for a regional title.
The match is said to promote and enhance the respective national competitions, give the local teams something extra to aspire to, and provide an international competition for our elite domestic teams and players to compete in.
The Intercity Cup in PNG saw the Rabaul Agmark Gurias crowned champions after defeating TNT Simbu Lions. The Gurias will face the club champions of the Vodafone Cup competition.
The growth of the code not only in Papua New Guinea but in the region is on the rise and creating avenues, such as the Melanesian Cup, will provide a platform to expose raw talent and also be used as a stepping stone for rugby league players to have the opportunity to play at an international organised match .
With PNG having a team playing in the intrust super cup, a competition like the Melanesian cup will help raise the standard of football not only in the country but the region as well.
