Illiterate grandmthers in Papua New Guineawill be trained inIndia to become Solar Engineers.
The Berefoot College inIndia has provided this opportunity for ten women, ages of 35 to 50, from rural parts oPNG.
Six were chosen from West New Beitain and four from Western Highlands and Jiwaka Provinces.
These women’s expenses will be provided bytheIndian Government.
Berefoot’s Founder, Banker Roy stressed that after men and young women are trained,they always leave for towns and cities for better jobs. That’s why it’s better to train mthers who will passthe knowledge totheir children.
Education Minister, James Marape was happy for such new approach to community development.
Mr. Marape also saidthe government will help to assist in any waythey can, to enhance such programs that will benefit rural communities inthe long run.
West New Beitain Governor, Sasindran Muthuvel andIndian High Commissioner Ajay Gondane sharedtheir gratitude and are looking forward to expanding similar programs with Berefoot in PNG
