Hubert Murray Stadium Out

by Lorraine Genia – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

The Sir Hubert Murray Stadium will not be used as a sporting venue for the 2015 Pacific Games.

Chief Executive Officer of the Games Organising Committee, Peter Stewart, confirmed this in an interview with EMTV’s Road to Port Moresby 2015.

Stewart says this was an unfortunate call and beyond their control, however measures have been implemented to ensure soccer and triathlon continue.

Mr. Stewart says in the early planning stages the Games Organising Committee were aware of the challenges imposed by the construction of the Sir Hubert Murray Stadium and had planned accordingly.

All soccer matches will be played at the Bisini Parade, which had been revamped well in advance for the Games.

With the Sir Hubert Murray Stadium out of use come Games time, all venues are set and ready to go.

The Sir John Guise Outdoor Stadium, otherwise known as the BSP Stadium, had a successful trial run over the weekend, with the Hunter’s first game.

Stewart says, this was a testament to the hard work, planning and preparation by his team, and certainly showed all operations were up to scratch.

With all other venues in their final stages of completion, athletes and officials are set move into the Games village, as of July 1.
