Games Organising Committee Operations Winding Down

By Elijah Lavett – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

The Pacific Games Authority and the Games Organising Committee are expected to cease operations over the next three months.

Minister for Sports, Justin Tkatchenko, announced yesterday that his role as Pacific Games Minister ended yesterday after the athletes incentives were given to the PNG Olympic Committee.

All team PNG athletes will receive their monetary incentives from the PNG Olympic Committee, with medal winning athletes to receive K20,000, K10,000 and K5, 000 respectively for gold, silver and bronze medals, with all other participating athletes to receive K2,500 each for their efforts.

The Games Organising Committee and the Pacific Games Authority will cease business entirely before the end of the year.

The venues and other assets will be handed over to the Sports Foundation of Papua New Guinea.

These will be under the supervision and management of Sports Foundation CEO, Peter Tsiamalili.

Tsiamalili had announced at the end of the games that venues would not be open to the public for use until final construction works were completed.

He also said that each of the venues has been appointed a manager, who will be responsible for making sure that these facilities are properly maintained.
