Facilities for Athletes

Asthe countdown continues for the 2015 Pacific Games, athletes will need international standard facilities to preparethemselves.

The Murray Barracks swimming pool and gymnasium will be upgraded and ready for athletes to use in five months’ time.

The Murray Barracks swimming pool and gymnasium has been chosen to undergo a major facelift to cater for athletes preparing for the 2015 Pacific Games. Apparentlythe new gymnasium and swimming pool will put a smile on athletes’ faces sincethere are no proper sporting training facilities available. 

Despitethe government concentration on buildingthe games venues,the stars ofthe show need proper sporting facilities to have favorable results onthe big day.

The Sport Foundation, in partnership withthe Sport Ministry anPNG Defence Force will revampthe pool and gymnasium. Once known to accommodate&nbspPNG athletes in 1991 Pacific Games, and now will be fully in force, going forward for athletes who will be going for gold ontheir home soil.  

The rundowntheatre will be completely demolished and will be turned into a new gymnasium. The swimming pool which is in a dilapidated state will soon be accommodatingthe 2006 Common Wealth Games Gold Medalist Ryan Pini as well as thers in training.    

The groundbreaking was held, identifying a timeline to ensurethe new facilities will be ready in time for athletes. The construction was awarded to L& A Construction and Nipuks Works Limited.
