By Godwin Eki – EMTV News, Port Moresby

Orchid enthusiasts in the Nation’s capital where treated to an array of orchids today at the Sir Rabbie Namaliu Orchids Garden at the National Parliament House.

The guests and visitors included APEC Delegates, tourists and residents of Port Moresby.

PNG Orchid Society’s Vice President, Godfrey Seeto, told EMTV that the two day Orchid exhibition that started today is being held to showcase the many different species of Orchids PNG has to offer, including the official 2018 APEC flower, a hybrid Dendrobium Orchid.

With three thousand registered orchids in the country, the PNG Orchid Society today displayed a variety of orchid plants and mixed breeds.

The exhibition of the orchids attracted visitors and orchid lovers, following the launching of the event last night.

He says the show is also used as an avenue to promote the importance of the horticulture industry in PNG.

The small but significant event is being held to coincide with APEC delegates meetings to show off PNG’s flora and fauna in the hope of attracting international visitors.

He said the orchid show is a reminder of the potential orchid plants have, as an income generating commodity.

With the 2018 APEC Summit named after a hybrid Orchid – ‘Dendrobium Iasiathera’, Godfrey says the selection of the APEC orchid was made by the Minister for APEC, Justin Tkatchenko.

The hybrid dendrobium was created from four different orchid species found in the four regions of the country, from Sepik, Port Moresby, Morobe and West New Britain.
