Esa’ala Library Workshop: Enhancing Student Learning

Milne Bay Provincial Division of Education has taken the lead in implementing the National Department of Education “Secretary’s Circular on Establishment of School Libraries”.

The Province has in their Provincial Education activities for 2012-2015 planned for four school library workshops for its four districts: Alotau; Esa’ala; Kiriwina-Goodenough and Samarai-Murua.

The Secretary’s Circular on Establishment of School Libraries in 2010 stated that it is compulsory for all schools operating under the National Education system to have a school library.  The development of school libraries is also captured in these plans:  Provincial, National Education and the Universal Basic Education Plans.

The school library workshop was conducted in the following districts: Bunama, Normanby Island and Esa’ala and was co-funded by Milne Bay Provincial Government, Division of Education and the National Library of Papua New Guinea.

The purpose of the workshop was to train teachers, teacher librarians and library assistants the basic skills to manage school libraries efficiently and effectively to enhance students’ learning in schools. Teachers who attended the workshop were so privileged to gain knowledge and skills as these would enable them to set school libraries for the benefit of the students.

The workshop was facilitated by officers of the National Library of Papua New Guinea.
