Engineering Battalion in East Sepik

The Papua New Guinea Defence Force is looking at a possible location to set up a new engineering battalion in East Sepik province.

On Tuesday, Defence Force Commander, Brigadier General, Gilbert Toropo, made a visibility tour to a site in Kubalia in Yangoru Saussia district to see the proposed location.

His visit was on the invitation of local MP, Richard Maru.

Brigadier General Gilbert Toropo said his visit to the district was to see a possible location where they can set up a forward operating base for the engineering battalion.

He said this is a feasibility trip and many such trips will happen in future.

Mr Toropo said their technical team will have to visit the site and do further inspections before establishing a base.

During his visit to the electorate, he witnessed the Covenant signing ceremony held in Yangoru station during the Repentance Day.

The Army Commander apologised for the wrongdoings of his army officers, saying their role was no longer going for war but for nation building and internal security.

Mr Maru said he is confident of establishing the forward base engineering battalion, the police mobile squad and a proper hospital among others in his electorate.
