Madang MP, Duban, on Madang Crimes

By Quinton Alomp – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Madang MP, Nixon Duban, has attributed the high crime rate and subsequent lawless behavior plaguing the town at present to weak family discipline.

Duban said that lawlessness in Madang needs to be addressed collectively.

“Criminal activities and petty crimes is not for politicians to solved, our duty is to resource police and community leaders to address it.

“The biggest problem I see is weak family discipline and respect. Grownup children are doing it because they are not disciplined when they are small,” Duban said.

His comments come after Madang students at the University of Papau New Guinea (UPNG) organised a forum last weekend to discuss possible solutions to the ongoing problems.

“Armed robberies are carried out by criminals outside of Madang who come in, [carry] out their activity and paint a bad image of the town,” Duban added.

Duban told UPNG students that it needs collective effort to solve lawlessness in the town.

“[It] has to start within the family,” he said.

The young Madang MP said this when presenting a cheque for K48,900 to Madang district students attending UPNG in Port Moresby last night.

Duban encouraged those posting comments on social media to understand the issues and facts before making political statements.
