Agriculture Specialists say capacity building and quality scientific checks on food security are integral parts of international trade.
Department of Agriculture & Livestock togther with line agencies have signed a Trade Related Assistance Project or TRAP withthe European Union to ensure that it is followed.
Phase two ofthe TRAP will ensure line agencies carry out scientific laboratory checks to ensure food security.
The Department Conference Room was filled with all representatives from DAL, National Quarantine &Inspection Authority and National ResearchInstitute. They were given a presentation ontheir roles and responsibility under Phase Two of TRAP.
The Agreement signed today ensures quality lab checks will be conducted on food and exports to ensurethey meet international food standards. Underthe MOA, Department Agriculture & Livestock will bethe coordinating department while NAQIA and NARI carry out research and quality scientific checks.
DAL has been supported bythe European Union through TRAP One in 2011. The Department has also held talks with Cairns Chamber of Commerce who are currently in Lae holding seminars on developingthe Agro BusinessIndustry.
