Controller of the State of Emergency (SOE) on Electricity Services, Captain Tom Ur, says customers in Port Moresby are responding well to the SOE.
Over a million Kina has been recouped at the Gordon’s Call Centre in the nation’s capital, with 35 to 40 customers visiting per day.
Many more customers, whose names were published on January 15 in the newspapers, are turning up to settle their long outstanding bills.
According to the SOE Controller, Captain Tom Ur, about 95 per cent of the customers who turned up at the PNG Power Call Centre, Gordon’s reported having done illegal meter bypassing or tampering on Easipay meters and stealing power for years.
Those customers were pardoned and advised to follow correct processes to connect power to their homes and pay for the services.
The statement also revealed that some PNG Power Limited staff members have reported illegal connections at their homes and like other customers; they are paying their outstanding power bills.
On the other hand, there are some customers who followed process in applying for new connections long before the State of Emergency.
These customers turned up at the Call Centre and asked if the SOE could quicken the process of their applications, and connect them to electricity supply.
