Crowne Plaza Robbed by Gang

A suspect is in police custody following an armed robbery at Port Moresby’s Crowne Plaza Hotel this morning.

NCD Metropolitan Superintendent, Ben Turi, says swift action by police resulted in the recovery of a trunk of cash and the stolen vehicle.

Turi says the arm robbery division has started collecting information for investigations to begin.

Between 9am and 10am today the armed robbery took place at Down Town’s Crowne Plaza Hotel. About five armed men walked into the hotel and took off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police units within the city were alerted while a Black Swan Security unit gave chase. Police exchanged shots with the group near Konedobu before the chase continued into Hanuabada village.

A police officer was shot at but luckily survived after the bullet bounced off his mobile phone and power pack. Two other officers from Black Swan Security were also injured during the standoff.

The suspect caught is now in police custody and will be questioned. Police say the other suspects are known.

The stolen vehicle and an undisclosed amount of cash is in police possession for investigation. Meanwhile, police are calling on business houses to be wise when moving cash around the city.
