Besta Cup Heats Up

by Jeremy Mogi – EM TV Sports, Lae

Day four of the Momase regional qualifiers of the Besta Cup, and with the finals just around the corner, teams were fighting hard for those top four spots.

Teams from across the region have gathered at the Lae football Grounds in a feast of football.

The tournament serves as a qualifier for the national championships next month.

Over the past four days, the Lae football grounds have played host to 15 men’s and 8 women’s teams.

Teams have come from as far as Maprik, East Sepik with the farthest along with central Morobe, along the Morobe and Oro border.

Roy Kamen, chairman of the local organising committee, believes that the heavyweights in Madang and Lae will still be in contention for the finals but there have also been surprises with Gaifar beating Lahi by one goal to see them also in contention for a top four finish.

The women’s have had no surprises, as LFA meet Wewak and Lahi facing off against Madang in the regional semi-finals.

With the success of the teams from outside the Morobe province placing well, these could be seen as signs in the developments of football in general.

Milan Miric, national assistant coach, is also expecting good talent to flow from the other regions as well.

The Besta tournament is the regional qualifiers for the four regions with Momase region opening the tournament.

The finals are scheduled for tomorrow, with the women’s third and fourth playoff as well as grand final decider, with the men’s also to follow.
