Basil Supports Juffa, While Assembly Declares Arore Governor

by Bethanie Hariman – EM TV, Lae

Deputy Opposition Leader, Sam Basil has condemned the vote-of-no confidence against Oro Governor Gary Juffa.

Speaking in the context that it shouldn’t happen in Morobe, he has described the move by Ijivitari MP, David Aroe and Sohe MP, Delilah Gore to lead members of the Provincial Assembly as unconstitutional.

Basil explains that no Member of Parliament has the legal right to oust a Governor mandated by the people of the Province.

He said if any MP has a problem with the Governor of the Province, then they need to wait till the next election.

“They (MP’s) have to wait for the next elections, they cannot remove a Governor elected by the people during his mid-term,” says Basil.

The Bulolo MP said this today during the launch of the Bulolo districts five-year development plan.

But, while the Deputy Opposition Leader has shown support, public support in Popondetta town has given leverage today for the removal of Juffa.

Governor, Gary Juffa was absent during today’s Provincial Assembly meeting conducted by nine Oro assembly members.

Juffa had wrote a letter for the Provincial Assembly meeting to be deferred because the Provincial Assembly Clerk was been very ill and could not administer today’s scheduled meeting for the Oro Provincial Assembly.

It’s understood that the meeting was carried out after mounting public pressure from groups of people backing the two members of parliament pushing for Governor Juffa’s ousting.

Five LLG presidents from the Ijivitari electorate and two LLG presidents for Sohe, including Ivijitari MP, Arore and Sohe MP, Gore agreed and moved the vote of no-confidence against Juffa and elected David Arore, as Oro Governor.
