Angau Cancer Centre Continues to Treat Cancer Patients, But with Limited Equipment

By Colleen Barilae – EM TV News, Lae

PNG’s Cancer Treatment Centre Senior Specialist for Radiation, Dr. John Niblett, has revealed every year over 10,000 deaths are caused by cancer.

The current cancer centre at Lae’s Angau Hospital continues to face problems with its equipment used for diagnosing and treating cancer.

CEO of Angau, Dr. Christopher Kenyhercz, says the new cancer facility that will be constructed near Angau hospital is aimed at reducing cancer rates.

Every year, the Angau cancer unit gets between 200 to 300 cases of breast cancer and over 100 cases of cervical cancer.

The facility has been the only one in the country that has been treating cancer patients with mouth, breast and cervical cancer cases.

One of the major challenges has been the rundown of facilities.

Doctors here say, the state of the facilities used to diagnose and treat breast, mouth and cervical cancer has been the same for a long time.

Angau CEO, Dr. Christopher Kenyhercz, says Angau is also embarking on improving its machines used for diagnosing cancer.

Despite various requests over four years for funds to upgrade equipment, doctors at the cancer department say facilities have remained the same.

Every year, the reported cancer cases increase, many of which require radiotherapy treatment.
