Fifty international observers have arrived in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, to observe the election process.
According to Bougainville’s Acting Electoral Commissioner, George Manu, their arrival in the autonomous region follows an invitation from the Papua New Guinea National and the Autonomous Bougainville Government.
“Election observation plays a very important role in elections by providing impartial assessment of the process. We welcome the presence and the contribution of the domestic and international observers to building overall confidence in this democratic process,” said Mr Manu.
International observation teams will be deployed to observe the election process, starting on the polling date which is Monday May 11.
Mr Manu said that the commission is committed to delivering credible and transparent elections.
In addition, 75 national observers will be deployed to all three regions to observe the election.
