Popondetta’s Biru Jail Commander, Teddy Biaga says operations at the Jail is back to normal after a food shortage problem that forced his officers to ration food for inmates to one meal per day.
He has dispelled rumors that the jail shut down on humanitarian grounds and prisoners went home.
Commander Biaga says Sohe MP and Community Development Minister, Delilah Gore has used public funds to assist the jail with food.
Under the Correctional Service Act 1995, prisoners are entitled to food, clothing, accommodation, hygiene and exercise as conditions of their sentences served.
It states under section 123 that food must be nutritious, served according to special dietary choices such as heatlth status and religious belief, and in certain cases at the detainees’ own cost.
