Papua New Guinea’s largest political party in the current government coalition, People’s National Congress (PNC) Party, staged its final fundraising event last night in Port Moresby, before it prepares for the General National Elections next year.
The People’s National Congress party staged a gala event, featuring, for the first time, a meet the press session that resulted in points of reassurance, about current national issues.
The PNC Convention Gala was hosted at the Stanley Hotel and Suites, and opened featuring a musical throw-back performance by local musicians, led by Central musician, Hitsy Golu, Sir George Telek, Tom Lari, and Jokema.
After the performance, the focus shifted to the different personalities in the PNC Party, before PNC cabinet ministers, led by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, made their way on stage, with senior media representatives.
Questions directed to Prime Minister Peter O’Neill and his ministers, covered the importance of Papua New Guinea’s growing global visibility.
“That is why engagement with the international community is very, very important. Our exposure to insitutions like APEC, of which we have been a member for twenty three, twenty four years now, is crucial because 50 percent of world trade is controlled by the 22 countries in the APEC,” Prime Minister O’Neill said.
Other questions probed what the government was doing in the areas of HIV and AIDS, Education, and Tourism.
But the most crucial question was whether or not there would be an end to the current foreign exchange crisis.
A question Prime Minister Peter O’Neill was more than ready to answer.
“I understand that it is starting to improve and I am very certain that before the end of the year, we will have some normalcy in the the country, and of course, with the new investment of Total and Wafi-Golpu, that is now in the process of getting established. I am certain that when that investment comes into the country as well, we will be on the right track, and restoration of the normalcy in trading,” Mr O’Neill said.
