PNG Seeking Fiji’s Approval To Lift Ox & Palm Ban

Minister for Trade, Commerce and Industry, Richard Maru, will be writing to the Fijian government to lift the ban on PNG product Ox & Palm.

Minister Maru said PNG has struggled for nearly 16 years to have Ox & Palm sold in Fiji.

He made this statement today in parliament after being questioned by Madang Governor, Jim Kas, over what position the government is taking.

The Minister responsible told parliament that through his department a letter will be sent tomorrow to the Fijian government to uplift the ban following results carried by the National Agriculture Quarantine and Inspection Authority (NAQIA) in PNG.

In a letter released by the Trade, Commerce and Industry Department, tests carried out by NAQIA proved that Ox and Palm does not possess any bio-security risk to Fiji, as claimed by the Biosecurity Authority in Fiji.

“We have nothing to hide, NAQIA has denied the claims by Fiji,” said Minister Maru.

Maru says Fiji must take into consideration the current imbalance of trade and uplift the ban.
