Paralympics to Begin

The sporting buzz will continue in Rio as the Paralympics are to set to begin early next month.

Paralympians from right around the globe will compete in two weeks of competition which will feature 4,400 athletes from more than 170 countries.

The Paralympic Games will take place as planned next month but face major budget cuts, the International Paralympic Committee has announced.

The cuts will be made to venues, the workforce and transport. However, they assure that the games will still run as expected.

Papua New Guinea’s six-member team will depart Port Moresby on Thursday, September 1 for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Team PNG includes a blind athlete, Joyleen Jeffrey, who will be competing in the 100m and 200m T12, and Samuel Nason competing in the 400m T47. Two coaches Peter Aglua and Samu Sasama are staff of PNG Sports Foundation and National Sports Institute and will be accompanying the athletes to Rio.
