The Port Moresby District Court is yet to hand down a verdict on the eviction of families, living at Kermedec, but this morning, families there were forcefully evicted.
A National Housing Cooperation Representative explained to EMTV News that NHC was responding to a court order.
But according to legal documents, the verdict is yet to be handed down.
Kermedec is a community situated behind the Ela Beach Telikom Exchange Tower.
It has 15 houses which are owned by NHC. There is also a settlement area just behind the NHC houses.
Last night, the families were told to evict the area due to a court order.
Each of the 15 families that were living in the NHC houses were given K3,000 each in cash as assistance funding to move their personal belongings out of the houses.
According to the NCD Health Division, this community was condemned in 2014 and labelled as an unhygienic environment for people to live in. But, families continue to live here.
The evicted families have raised a collective concern.
They claim the eviction is illegal because they say the court is yet to hand down a verdict.
However, the eviction commenced this morning under a strong police watch, though the court’s decision is listed for tomorrow morning.
And for tonight, the evicted settlers say, they will be sleeping at Ela Beach, Port Moresby.
