PNG Opposition Issues Warning on Eve of Return of Parliament

The Opposition has issued a strong warning to the speaker and technical teams involved in  the recall of parliament, saying they expect nothing less than compliance to parliamentary procedure and the recent Supreme Court order.

Opposition Leader, Don Polye, said any attempt to derail the Vote of No Confidence motion will be seen as a violation of the court order and those involved will be charged criminally.

“We expect nothing more and nothing less,” said Polye.

“We expect the speaker to receive the motion, to adjourn the parliament for seven days then to recall parliament for the vote.  It’s that simple.”

Over the last 36 hours various legal interpretations of the Supreme Court order have surfaced.

The speaker could also call for a vote tomorrow without allowing for a seven day adjournment.

Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, also released a statement calling for stability. He said political stability was necessary to ensure that investor confidence remained unshaken.
