Soft Drink Remains an Unhealthy Option

A recent study published in the American Journal of Nutrition has found that people who consume more than one soft drink per day have a higher risk of stroke than people who avoid soft drink altogether.

Loaded with sugar, soft drinks are an empty source of calories that cause weight gain and contribute to the worldwide epidemic of obesity. Drinking large amounts of this rapidly digested sugar causes your blood sugar levels to spike, which can lead to both inflammation and insulin resistance.

Soft drink is often the root cause of gastro-esophageal reflux disease, a digestive disorder which causes heartburn, chest pain, nausea and regurgitation (right sided heart failure, which means that the right side of the heart is not pumping blood to the lungs as normal) that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (the blockage of the food pipe that runs between the throat and the stomach by a circular muscle), which is when the contents of the stomach leak into the esophagus causing not only pain but an actual burning  of the esophagus from stomach acid.

Although soft drinks are not a direct cause of ulcers, they are known to irritate and make those with ulcers suffer more pain. Soft drinks also contain artificial colourings and food chemicals such as derivative 4-methylimidazole (4-MI); which is why soft drink has been shown to possibly lead to forms of cancer.
