PNG Sporting Venues Pricey

By Rositta Liosi – EM TV Online

The 2015 Pacific Games held in the nation’s capital brought about various infrastructure developments that gave Port Moresby a much-needed facelift.

Prior to the games sporting venues around the city were in a state of disrepair, and were pretty much an eye sore.

With the aid of various sponsors the Sir John Guise Stadium, Taurama Aquatic Centre (formerly known as the Sir Donald Cleland Pool), Bisini Sport Grounds and the Rita Flynn Netball Courts are being used to host local Sport competitions.

However it has come to the attention of some sporting groups that the fees charged by National Sport Trust Limited (NTSL) for the use of these venues is rather costly.

For example, the cost of hiring the Taurama Aquatic Centre stands at K4,650 per day. Most Sport competitions are not profit making enterprises, nor do they attract adequate sponsorship.

The Chief Operating Officer for NTSL David Aua told The National via email:

“We have discounts that we give and will work with clients, especially sporting groups, to assist them with the best cost for their event or competition.”

Aua said all standard cost of hire of venues would be made available when the PNG Sport Foundation officially takes charge of the venues.
