NCD Governor Committed to Betelnut Ban

By Mickey Kavera – EM TV News, Port Moresby

National Capital District Commission has exhausted all its resources to enforce the buai ban.

Governor, Powes Parkop admits all resources were used to enforce the ban leading up to the Pacific Games and during the games.

Parkop says, a lot of resources were utilised to create a conducive environment for the games to be held in a very peaceful, clean and safe environment.

But the commission is looking at different ways to enforce the ban.

With the reserve police coming on board, it has given them the capacity to maintain the ban.

He says, long term plans include opening up a betelnut market in the Motu and Koita villages.

Dialogue has been established with the Motu and Koitabu leaders especially members of the Motu Koita Assembly.

There is a general feeling of agreement but a workable formula is yet to be developed.

Parkop prefers betelnut be restricted to those areas once the final agreement is reached.

Parkop believes restricting betelnut within the Motu Koita villages is a better alternative to ensure control.

He is committed to the outcomes of the ban and warned that all illegal betelnut markets will be closed.
