Hundreds Displaced in Tuvalu after Cyclone Pam

The government of Tuvalu is working to provide accommodation for families whose homes were destroyed by Cyclone Pam. The government is managing and coordinating the response, through the National Disaster Coordination Committee.

According to Oxfam New Zealand, 45 per cent of the population were displaced by the cyclone, with severe damage caused to the outer islands. Water and food security remain a major concern.

Scores of people are still living in evacuation centres; with up to 70 families housed in school classrooms. Spokesperson, Panapasi Nelesoni, revealed that the government is now working to move displaced families into community halls to allow for children to back to school.

Nelesoni said that the government provided financial assistance for people to rebuild their homes, after previous cyclones.

Prime Minister of Tuvalu, Enele Sopoaga, in talks with Oxfam, said that Tuvalu will need to increase its ability to face climate based disasters. He said that homes were washed away by storm surges created by Cyclone Pam.
