People from the West Coast of Vanimo, West Sepik Province are calling on the National Government to upgrade low cement bridges to permanent high bridges.
This comes after the collapse of the Daunda Bridge that connects Vanimo town to the PNG-Indonesian Border. There are eight low cement bridges in the Vanimo West Coast Highway.
During heavy rains, massive flooding easily covers the bridges making crossing impossible for travellers.
This affects the day to day business for locals and is also a huge risk for people who are in need for immediate medical services from the Provincial Hospital in Vanimo Town.
Reports from the National Weather Services are indicating a continuity of heavy rain until next month. This will affect the lives of thousands living along the coastal villages of Vanimo.
In the meantime proper work on the collapse of the Daunda Bridge has not been made.
