PNG Taekwondo Federation Preparing Fighters for Rio Olympics 2016

By Jeremy Mogi – EM TV Sports

The PNG Taekwondo federation is placing emphasis on preparing its fighters for the Rio Olympics in 2016.

The Southern Olympic Taekwondo trials was held this afternoon, where eight fighters across various weight divisions were all vying for a spot in a selection squad that will then compete against the current national team fighters.

President for the PNGTF, Peter Miria said, the opportunity to showcase and get selected are high, and that these new fighters, will then have to prove themselves against the best that PNG has, in-order to make the final cut in February

The next set of trials will be held in Kokopo in late October with the host organisers also confirming that preparations are going as scheduled.

Miria believes that the talent from that part of the country will also be good, considering that Colland Kokin and Pacific games champion Rene Pennie are also from that region.

A final squad will be selected soon after and then the national selection officially takes place by February. These fighters then attempt to qualify on their own merits.
