PNG Palais Need Improvement

By Judah Memafu – EM TV Sport, Port Moresby

The PNG Palais, the country’s women’s rugby side, finished fourth at the recent Oceania Olympic qualifier in Auckland, New Zealand, but the question is, is that enough?

Although much has been said about their male counterparts, the Pukpuks, in the media recently, many are left questioning whether the Palais have truly lived up to many people’s expectations.

It showed, very evidently, at the 2015 Oceania Sevens Championships that there is room for much needed improvement.

The need for discipline and team cohesion, ball handling and general fitness has been the Palais biggest weakness.

Yet despite these bleak facts, there were standout performances during the two day tournament in New Zealand.

It was none other than team skipper, Debbie Kaore, leading the charge in an effort to put the Palais on the world map.

With the PNG Palais still yet perform to expectation on the international scene, it now puts pressure on the PNGRFL to establish player pathways and development programs to enhance women’s rugby in Papua New Guinea.
