Oceania Rugby Cup Indicates Growth

By Lorraine Genia – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

The 2015 Oceania Rugby Cup sure put on a show to the rest of the world, with a particular focus on the talent and potential that lies within our region.

With the PNG Pukpuks dominating the tournament from the opening whistle, and Tahiti taking home the second place prize, the level and quality of rugby union came as a shock to the international rugby audience.

American Samoa marked their territory as debutants, while Solomon Islands bought physicality and rivalry, particularly to the PNG Pukpuks.

The quality and level of rugby played was shared to the world through the live streaming of the event on EMTV Online, giving prospective clubs around the world the chance to be able to scout potential talent.

The tournament provided a hint that the lowly funded sport within the country and the PNG Pukpuks have the potential to progress further.

While the cup is a bi-annual tournament, where all tier three rugby countries battle it out, Oceania Rugby officials said the onus remains on the independent bodies to maintain the hype around rugby union throughout their respective countries and the region.
